Sir Elton cancels Liverpool gig

Sir Elton toured the US with Billy Joel earlier this year

Sir Elton John has postponed the final concert of his UK tour at Liverpool's Echo Arena on Wednesday - the fourth he has had to shelve because of flu.

He had previously scrapped gigs in Sheffield on Friday, Newcastle on Saturday and Tuesday's Wembley Arena leg after doctors advised him to rest.

Promoters are trying to reschedule the gigs for dates in December.

A spokesman for the singer-songwriter, 62, said he was "terribly disappointed" at not being able to perform.

Sir Elton and Billy Joel were forced to cancel US dates after Joel fell ill back in July.

Joel was told to rest after coming down with "flu-like symptoms" and "extreme fatigue".

Sir Elton and Joel had been touring together for two months under the banner Face 2 Face, selling out arenas across the US.

Robbie to get lifetime Brit Award

Robbie Williams has won best British male four times

Pop star Robbie Williams will receive the outstanding contribution to music prize at next year's Brit Awards.

The 35-year-old has already won 11 Brits as a solo artist - more than any other singer.

Ged Doherty of the Brits committee praised Williams, saying he was "one of the outstanding artists and performers of his generation".

Williams won his first Brit award as a member of Take That, when Could It Be Magic was named best single in 1993.

'Absolute thrill'

The group went on to scoop three more trophies before Williams quit in 1995.

The star then carved out a successful solo career with hit singles such as Angels, She's The One and Rock DJ.

Williams has won the best British male prize four times.

Mr Doherty said it will be "an absolute thrill" to have Williams at the 30th anniversary of the Brit award show.

The star has recently made a comeback, appearing on the X Factor last weekend, and playing his first UK concert for three years as part of the BBC Electric Proms on Wednesday.

His exuberant X Factor performance was heavily criticised in the press, but writing on his blog after the Proms show, Williams said: "I wasn't aware until last night that the X Factor performance was given such an horrendous kicking."

He went on to praise the "lovely audience" at Wednesday night's concert.

"I know listening to new stuff can be a bit of a bore, but everyone was lovely and received it with kind hearts and consideration, so thank you very much," he wrote.

The gig broke records when it was beamed live to more than 250 cinemas in 23 countries across Europe, from Latvia to Luxembourg - but Williams claimed to know nothing about the achievement.

"I kind of heard it being mentioned but I think selective hearing must have been in action at the time," he said.

Previous recipients of the outstanding achievement award include The Pet Shop Boys, Paul McCartney, Oasis and The Who.

Isle of Wight festival generates £15 million boost to local ecomony

16 June 2009 - The Isle of Wight festival at Seaclose Park has proved significant to Newport’s cash flow.

With 55,000 punters, it’s been revealed that the annual music festival invests, “at least £15m to the island's economy”, says John Metcalfe, the assistant director for economic development and tourism.

This year’s event saw final night headliners from Pixies and Neil Young on Sunday (14 June).

The council, which is backing the decision to secure the music festival site for the next 10 years, believes eight years of the event has also boosted the island’s image.

Festival season is now well under way after last weekend when Download took place in the Midlands, Rockness kicked off near Inverness and the Isle of Wight Festival hit the south coast.

After being brought back to life in 2002, the Isle of Wight Festival is well on its way to re-creating the image it once held withthathistorical Jimi Hendrix performance of 1970.

Friday night ended with The Prodigy delivering their trade mark aggression and psychedelic show and the crowd embraced Keith, Liam and Maxim Reality's brand of intense dance and infectious energy.

Saturday night headliners were Isle of Wight old timers, Stereophonics, who took time out of recording their new album (due out later this year) to give a crowd pleasing set of chart hits and old favourites.

For some, this was the highlight of the weekend as it was their only UK festival performance this summer.

"We've now got to get Bob Dylan to come back, that’s one of my ambitions."

Isle of Wight promoter, John Giddings, responsible for resurrecting the festival told 6 Music he was really chuffed to book Neil Young.

He said he had been trying for the last eight years: “We’ve now got to get Bob Dylan to come back, that’s one of my ambitions.”

And it was worth the wait – in a lumberjack shirt Neil Young stunned punters into frenzied cheers.

Starting out with mellow country classics like Old Man, he fed off the crowd building into the rambling powerhouse of Rockin’ the Free World, closing with a cover of The Beatles’ Day In The Life.

Sunday also saw The Charlatans in the Big Top tent blast out a mixed bag of new and old as the final act on a bill curated by frontman Tim Burgess himself.

The singer lined up Killing Joke to perform, which he said was nostalgic for him: “They were actually the first band that I ever saw live when I was a kid, so it kind of made it really personal.”

The three days of endless sunshine fuelled an intimate and chilled atmosphere with an eclectic mix of festival-goers from the seasoned reveller to local teenagers and families.

Other performances that attracted attention were The View, with lead singer Kyle Falconer leaving a lot of fans wondering why he was sporting what looked like a drawn on pirate patch, and The Pixies who although a bit raw combined their cool, laid back attitude with a familiar post-punk sound to draw a massive crowd.

The Isle of Wight festival boasts a heritage many would envy but still manages to strike the balance of the smaller bespoke festivals with the adrenaline highs of the bigger capacity venues.

This year it served as the perfect start of the festival season looking ahead to Glastonbury and T in the Park.

Rodgers confirms split with Queen

Rodgers and Queen performed for Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday

Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers says his collaboration with the surviving members of Queen is over.

Rodgers joined Brian May and Roger Taylor in 2004 and performed on several tours. They also recorded an album, The Cosmos Rocks, to mixed reviews in 2008.

Speaking to Billboard magazine, the singer said: "At this point we're gonna sit back from this."

Queen's original singer, flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury, died of an Aids-related illness in 1991.

Rodgers has not ruled out the possibility of working together again.

"It's kind of an open book, really," he said. "If they approach me to do something for charity, for instance, or something like that... I'd be very much into doing that, for sure."

Queen bassist John Deacon retired from music in 1997, Rodgers joined May and Taylor for a set at the inaugural UK Music Hall of Fame Awards in 2004.

They subsequently toured Europe and Japan in 2005.

Rodgers hits the road with Bad Company for a 10-date run in the US this summer.
